What is Barre?

Barre is a form of exercise inspired by ballet, Pilates + strength training to music.

You'll use controlled movements, pulses, holds + repetitions to challenge your muscles, with the barre providing support for balance + stability.

Don't be fooled by the small movements — Barre can be surprisingly challenging!

You can expect to work your legs, glutes, core + arms while also developing balance, coordination, mobility + muscular endurance.

Barre classes for beginners

Never tried Barre before?

That's absolutely fine.

You don't need any ballet experience, dance training or previous Barre experience to join us.

You also don't need to be particularly fit, strong or flexible.

Our classes are designed to be accessible, with options and modifications so you can work at a level that feels right for your body.

You can take your time learning the movements, take a break whenever you need one + gradually build your confidence.

What happens in a Barre class?

Our Barre classes combine a variety of standing + mat-based exercises.

You might work through:

  • Ballet-inspired movements

  • Glute + leg exercises

  • Pulses + holds

  • Balance exercises

  • Core work

  • Light weights for the arms

  • Mobility + stretching

The focus is on controlled, purposeful movement rather than rushing through lots of repetitions.

You'll work hard, but there's no need to take yourself too seriously.

Wobbly legs are very much allowed.

What are the benefits of Barre?

Regular Barre classes can help you:

  • Build muscular strength + endurance

  • Strengthen your legs + glutes

  • Develop core strength

  • Improve balance + stability

  • Improve mobility

  • Develop body awareness

  • Support posture + alignment

  • Enjoy low-impact movement

Barre can also be a lovely complement to other forms of exercise, including yoga, Pilates, running, walking + strength training.

Do I need to be a dancer?

No!

I’m not!

Although Barre takes inspiration from ballet, you're not learning ballet technique or choreography.

You don't need ballet shoes, dance experience or the ability to do the splits.

The ballet barre is simply one of the tools we use during the workout.

If you've never danced before, you can still absolutely enjoy Barre.

Barre vs Pilates

Barre + Pilates have plenty in common. Both use controlled movements, muscular endurance, posture, alignment + body awareness.

Barre incorporates more ballet-inspired movement to music, while Pilates has a stronger emphasis on core control, stability + precise movement.

If you enjoy Pilates, there's a good chance you'll enjoy Barre too — but you don't need to have tried Pilates first.

What should I wear to Barre?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely.

Barre is generally practised barefoot or in grip socks.

And don't worry — there is absolutely no requirement for a leotard or ballet shoes! Unless of you course you want to!

What equipment do I need?

The Inspired Studio has everything you need for your Barre class, including the equipment + props used during the practice.

Of course, if you prefer to bring your own mat or equipment, you're very welcome to.

Just turn up, get comfortable + we'll take care of the rest.
